Yoga and Black Healing

It's not surprising that yoga is becoming more popular among Black women. Although yoga has always been associated with white women and their practices, Ebony magazine published a 1975 article about the rising number of Black women who practice yoga. Williford believes that yoga can help people find community and manage stress. Yoga's holistic nature can help lower the risk of developing chronic illnesses. Listed below are just a few examples of how yoga can help Black women.

In a recent interview, twenty Black women from diverse backgrounds shared their experiences and the benefits of yoga. These women have encouraged other Black women from diverse backgrounds to become more active and find peace within. Black women are more involved in regular yoga and wellness activities, which could be a result rising racial tension. But, yoga needs to be promoted and made more accessible to the wider public.

In addition to promoting yoga, Black yoga instructors are helping to create culturally sensitive spaces. Many of these communities are facing social and economic problems. The Pan African Connection offers classes at the Litehouse Wellness Center in Dallas, for example. The "Black Male Yoga Initiative" was founded by Changa Bell in 2015. Many Black women are beginning to integrate yoga into their lives. And by ensuring that these women are getting the proper training, more opportunities for participation will arise.

Besides creating diverse and inclusive yoga spaces, Satya has facilitated a growing movement to promote diversity in the yoga industry. In 2016, she founded the Black Yogic Teachers Alliance, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships, training, and teaching opportunities. She also launched the Yoga Green Book, which is an online directory of Black studios and teachers. The website also contains resources and a list of BIPOC certified yoga instructors. Yoga is a popular practice among Black Americans.

Yoga has been used in healing and addressing health disparities as well as an effective way of promoting diversity. It has been especially helpful to see more Black teachers in yoga communities as the popularity of the practice has increased. The United States has more than 36million yoga-loving Americans, and only 85 percent identify as black. It's not surprising there is no diverse yoga community in America.

All over the city, a new breed of Black yoga studios are popping up. Some of these are dedicated to providing yoga training free to people with injuries. Others focus on teaching yoga to people of color in a warm and welcoming environment. Each studio offers a variety of classes, despite having different styles. The diversity of these studios is what makes them so attractive to the community. A well-rounded yogi is healthy and fit.
