Yoga in America: Who brought Yoga to the West?

mental health services los angeles

Yoga has a rich American history. This ancient practice began as a time-consuming tradition that only the rich could afford. Yoga has gained popularity over the years as a fitness routine with a strong spiritual component. Today, yoga is available for every budget and lifestyle. The Sanskrit word yoga means "union" and is derived from Sanskrit. Yoga is a way to unify the self and the ultimate Self.

In America, yoga exposure was limited in the 1960s. This was due in large measure to a 40 year-old immigration law which barred Indians residing in the U.S. West Coast union leaders passed the law to stop Indians and other Asians entering the United States. A surge in gurus emerged as a result. This was in the 1970s. There were thousands of Indians in America.

The first true yoga practitioner in the West was Sarah Farmer. Swami Vivekananda made her acquaintance while she was at conferences at Green Acre. Swami Vivekananda was to be invited to America, so they formed a plan. Sara Bull was also present, and the two met Dr. Haridas Chaudhuri. He had been sent to America by Sri Aurobindo. The women started teaching each other yoga in early 1970s.

The introduction of yoga into America began in 1950s when Swami Vivekananda (a Westerner from India) introduced the ancient yoga philosophy to the American public. In the early 1890s, he introduced hatha yoga to the American public. With the increasing popularity of this type of yoga, many gurus from India came to America, bringing new types of yoga to the nation.

In the 1930s, yoga was first practiced in India, but it was not widespread in the United States until the 1970s, when Hollywood actors such as Aldous Huxley and Charlie Chaplin took an interest in it. The rise of yoga that is posture-based began to make yoga more popular in the United States in the mid-twentieth Century. In the late twentieth century, the Indian traditions of hatha yoga merged with Western physical culture. Swami Kuvalayananda along with other American Yogis gave the practice a mainstream basis by establishing it in medical science.

Despite the historical roots of yoga, this was not the first major success story of American yoga until the 1950s. The majority of Americans had never even heard of it. Yoga's westward expansion was marked by many practitioners. Sivananda & Desikachar, two popular yogis, were among those who brought the guru's teachings into the U.S.
